Teteh

This month remarks a year of her presence in our home. At first, we didn’t have 100% confidence on her since she seemed very naïve and quiet. Even now I must say that she’s not a perfect nanny but she has improved a lot compared to her first days. Teteh is the nick name we gave to her and she was happy with it even though she’s not a sundanese. She was born in losari village Cirebon. Her formal education was up until middle school and she had to stop due to fund reasons. Her father is a farmer and her mother doesn’t work. She was found by Daarut Tauhid (DT) in her village and got a training to become a nanny in Bandung.

How did we meet her?

We were in the search for Pilar nanny in the new year of 2010 since his former nanny left us without any notice. I got DT contact person from hubby’s sister but I wasn’t quite confident of getting any cause everyone said that the probability is small, even the person I contacted said so. Good news arrived end of January 2010 where we finally got a chance (we were waiting list for almost a month) to attend the seminar in DT and to interview potential nanny candidate. All nannies in DT are non-experienced. They were found in poor villages and for human development reasons DT trained them to become nanny and acquire new skills. The training lasts 3-4 months before they get to work in the real world.
DT provided us with the health, psycho test, and appraisal record during the training period. Teteh wasn’t the best of all. She even listed as the less recommended ones among other potential nannies. In fact as we were in the last rows of the waiting list, we didn’t have chance to choose the nanny for ourselves. Guess this is what they call blessing in disguise.
Why?
As I told earlier, teteh wasn’t very convincing. Very typical villager who never had the chance to see the world. She speaks quietly, sometimes she didn’t response exactly the questions we raised. She smiled a lot though. After going through interview session and 1 day parents seminar, we finally decided to ask her to work with us. It was quite a touchy moment when she said bye to the rest of the nannies in DT. Everyone was waving at her from the dorm rooms. Welcome to the real world teteh!
Teteh got her first lessons from myself and also Neng (Pilar’s cousin nanny) the one who helped us throughout the days where nanny 1 left. She made improvements in terms of her domestic skill (prepare pilar meal, bath time, wash pilar clothes, etc.) also her speaking skill and initiatives. I wouldn’t have guessed that she now can play vocabulary cards with Pilar in his play time..
She has off course some room for improvement, especially in hygiene. But now it’s far better than before.

As her contract will soon end, we really hope she’ll stay. We really appreciate her helping us taking care of pilar when we’re not at home and we’re happy with it. Hope she feels the same way too.
