out of other (bigger) cities in sumatera, my first trip to this island was to Jambi. it was an exhausting yet exciting 2 days/1 nite trip. not so much to see or do in this town of Sultan Taha. the airport itself is so small that we only had to pay 8000 rupiahs tax (compared to 30.000 in Balikpapan). hehehe.
the landmark of jambi must be the batanghari river, with its 508 m long bridge. crossing the river, you will be in "sebrang" area where the origin of jambi began. a bit of mix between malay and arabic people mingle there. they have their own "batik" and live from fishing, as well as agriculture.
jambi people live from mostly crude palm oil industry and gas production (petrochina as the biggest contractor). they have a quite small harbour by the batanghari river called "talang duku". we went here to have a look at some cargo loading activities.
not to miss whenever you go there: pempek panggang asiong (in talang banjar area), kemplang krupuk (fried or baked) with its sour-spicy sauce, lempok durian (if you happen to like this fruit).
some public places which are quite often visited by jambi people: boulevard near governor's and major's office building. mostly youngsters hang out in the afternoon til night.
and it's just funny to hear them talking with their jambi accent.. :) everything ends with an "o".
hmm glad to visit your hometown where you spent almost 15 years of your childhood dear :)
